Adware and spyware - technological menace

July 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

While doing research for her money laundering thesis, a law school student frequently employed the use of Google. This was valuable to the student and the paper writing procedure. A couple months after beginning her project, the student became distressed to discover that her trusty search engine began leading her to a web page unrelated to money laundering.

As the problem refused to go away, she had no other choice but to realize that she had been bugged because a problem with the search engine or her internet connection would not have been as persistent. Despite being annoying, when the bugging comes from a human, it can be gotten rid of. Adware and spyware are computer bugs that, as they demonstrated by their persistence in the law school student’s computer that they infected, are not as easily gotten rid of. Though the student used her computer daily for the research and writing of her papers, she was otherwise not very technologically educated.

Though frustrating, the law school student can take comfort in the fact that she is not alone in her fight against spyware and adware, as many people are confronted with this technological menace. Originating in 1995, ’spyware’ as a word to describe one of the more sinister computer bugs did not catch on until 2000. Coming in the form of a software or script, this refers to any program that hijacks a personal computer and allows another party to see a computer user’s personal information.

Though this is frequently done by looking at the user’s keystrokes and web surfing history, it can also be accomplished by looking at the materials stored on a user’s hard drive. Spyware proves that you do not have to be in a James Bond movie to be a victim of intense infiltration tactics. Invading other’s privacy is a highly intrusive act that definitely makes the innocents involved victims. Spying on criminals with spyware makes sense because it can help society for the greater good, but too often this program is used to track sensitive personal information, such as credit card information. Anti-spyware programs that are kept updated are essential for any computer user.

To prevent becoming victims, individuals should block spyware, malware, and adware, as they are all similar programs. Online adware and spyware blocker programs are easily available to help in this endeavor. Disabling the harmful programs that are already in place is one function of these blockers, but so too is preventing any additional harmful programs that are similar in nature.

Viruses and worms manage to prevent regular computer usage by their self replication, but although spyware, adware and malware do not self replicate, they too can cause disturbances in the daily activities of computers. One such problem caused by these software programs is the fact that they cause the computer itself to slow down. Spyware programs are master criminals, able to hide themselves from anyone seeking them out as the reason their computer has dragged to a crawl. Because of the nasty nature of the infiltration programs, it is always best to have a great blocker to prevent the infections from happening.
