The aroma and smooth rich flavors of Cuban cigars are famous throughout the world. Unsuspecting cigar enthusiasts are often caught out by fake cigars sold to them by unscrupulous dealers cashing in on that fame. The best way to ensure you do not end up buying fakes is to purchase them from a legitimate dealer. There are legitimate sources out there to buy from such as mail order cigar suppliers or your local tobacconist.
If you are offered a box of Cuban cigars, you would be very wise to give the box a good examination first. There are a number of things you need to look for to save being caught out. There are a number of marks on the cigar box to look for including a white and green guarantee seal situated on the front left side of the box as well as a seal that has an insignia with a picture of a hat and shield. You should also see the word ‘Habanos’ printed on a white sticker affixed diagonally on the upper right corner of the cigar box; be wary if it isn’t.
The box should also be free of damage, ink smudge marks and look immaculate, so if the box does not look like this then stay clear of it. There is also the word ‘Habanos’ heat stamped into the bottom of the box. Some fake boxes of Cuban cigars have this but printed labels or a rubber stamp have been used. An additional factory stamp on the bottom of the box indicates when and where these cigars were rolled using blue, green or black ink.
It is worth checking the cigars as well because damage may have occurred in transit. Cigar connoisseurs will immediately recognize the distinct aroma of a Cuban cigar if they are given the opportunity to open the box. A weak or an indistinct aroma is a sure sign that it is not a box of Cuban cigars. Also all the cigars in the box should be facing the same way although the upper row may seem a little flatter than the rest of the box.
While checking the cigars, make sure that the foot of each cigar is cut clean, and that all the caps and bands are the same. If it is possible, try to feel the cigars as they should be firm and pliable without any hard or soft areas. There are a great many checks but they are all there to make sure that you are not sold a counterfeit box of Cuban cigars.
